Brandon Petersen’s Costly Errors Are Becoming A Concern For Kaizer Chiefs
Can Brandon Petersen regain his confidence before another costly mistake puts Chiefs in an even deeper hole?

45d agoBrandon Petersen has endured another difficult night between the posts, and this time his mistake against Richards Bay has reportedly taken his tally of goalkeeping errors to three this season.
Kaizer Chiefs were forced to fight back twice to secure a 2–2 draw against Richards Bay at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday, but once again, goalkeeper and captain Brandon Petersen found himself at the centre of attention for the wrong reasons.
Just eight minutes into the encounter, Petersen received a back pass but failed to deal with it properly under pressure from Nqaba Xulu. The Richards Bay forward pounced on the loose ball and finished into an empty net, giving the hosts an early advantage.
It was a costly error, particularly because Petersen was not facing overwhelming pressure when he received the ball.
And according to reports, the incident represents the third major goalkeeping error Petersen has made this season.
His first came during Chiefs' MTN8 defeat to Golden Arrows earlier this month. Petersen was caught out by Khulekani Shezi, who capitalised to score the only goal of the game and send Chiefs out of the competition.
The second came against Mamelodi Sundowns. Petersen came off his line but was unable to prevent Cassius Mailula from restoring parity for Sundowns in a match Chiefs eventually drew 1–1.
Now, the Richards Bay mistake has brought the issue back into focus.
For a goalkeeper, errors are often magnified because there is usually very little room for recovery once a mistake directly leads to a goal. For Petersen, the concern is not necessarily one bad night, but the frequency at which these costly moments are beginning to appear.
That makes the situation particularly interesting for Kaizer Chiefs, especially with the club having recently added Renaldo Leaner to their goalkeeping options.
However, it would also be unfair to judge Petersen solely by his mistakes.
The 31-year-old was one of Chiefs' stronger performers during the previous campaign and was even considered for South Africa's 2026 World Cup squad before ultimately missing out on the final selection. Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune publicly encouraged him to keep working hard after the disappointment.
That previous form is precisely why his current struggles are attracting attention.
Petersen clearly has the experience and ability to recover, but goalkeepers are judged heavily on consistency. Chiefs will need their captain to rediscover the reliability that made him such an important figure last season.
The 2–2 draw with Richards Bay means Chiefs avoided defeat, but the repeated errors from their goalkeeper are becoming a storyline that Fernando Da Cruz's side cannot afford to ignore.
Three errors in the early stages of the season may be just a bad run of form — or they could become a problem if Petersen fails to put an end to them quickly.
For now, the question hanging over Amakhosi is simple:
Can Brandon Petersen regain his confidence before another costly mistake puts Chiefs in an even deeper hole?
