214d agoFC Barcelona rescued a dramatic 1–1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Tuesday night at St. James’ Park.
The Catalan side left it late but managed to secure a crucial away result that keeps the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Spain.
The match was tightly contested for long periods, with both teams struggling to find a breakthrough.
Newcastle looked the more dangerous side for much of the second half and were eventually rewarded in the 86th minute when Harvey Barnes fired the hosts into the lead after meeting a cross from substitute Jacob Murphy.
The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the stadium as the English side appeared on course for a valuable first-leg victory.
However, Barcelona refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, the visitors were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the Newcastle penalty area.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the 96th minute to level the score and stun the home crowd.
The late equalizer ensures Barcelona head into the second leg with momentum, while Newcastle will feel disappointed after coming so close to securing an important win.
With the tie now perfectly poised, both teams will prepare for a decisive return leg in Spain as they battle for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
