Tanzania 1-1 Tunisia: Draw Sees Both Sides Advance to AFCON Knockouts
December 30, 2025
284d agoA historic 1-1 draw between Tanzania and Tunisia was enough to see both teams progress from Group C of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Taifa Stars reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Match Summary and Key Moments
The first half was controlled by Tunisia, with winger Ismael Gharbi hitting the post before winning and converting a penalty just before halftime to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Tanzania responded immediately after the break. In the 48th minute, midfielder Feisal Salum unleashed a powerful low shot from outside the box that found the bottom corner for a spectacular equalizer. The match settled into a tense, tactical battle, with Tunisia content to manage the game for the point that guaranteed their qualification, a decision met with some disapproval from their fans at the final whistle.
Team Performances and Historical Context
Tunisia, under coach Sami Trabelsi, achieved their primary goal of advancing but were criticized for a lack of attacking ambition against a lower-ranked opponent. For Tanzania, coached by Miguel Gamondi, the result was a monumental achievement. By securing two points, they became the first team to advance from an AFCON group with that tally since the tournament expanded to 24 teams in 2019, edging out Angola on goals scored.
What's Next
With this result, Tunisia finished second in Group C and will face Mali in the Round of 16 in Casablanca on Saturday, January 3. Tanzania, having qualified as one of the best third-place teams, will stay in Rabat for a formidable challenge against tournament hosts Morocco on Sunday, January 4.
