33d agoNigeria’s Falconets were handed a difficult start to their campaign as Spain U20 secured a 2–0 victory in their opening encounter.
Spain wasted little time making their presence felt, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute through Marisa García, who gave the European side an early advantage.
The Falconets battled to find a way back into the contest, but Spain’s disciplined defensive shape made it difficult for Nigeria to create clear-cut opportunities. Despite their efforts, the deficit remained intact as the game entered its final stages.
Spain eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute, with Alba Cerrato finding the net to double their lead and leave Nigeria facing an uphill battle.
The Falconets pushed for a response, but Spain held firm to secure all three points and open their campaign on a winning note.
For Nigeria, however, the defeat is only the beginning. There is still plenty to play for, and attention now turns to their next group-stage challenge.
NEXT UP: CHINA PR
The Falconets will look to bounce back when they face China PR on September 10.
With their tournament hopes still alive, Nigeria must regroup quickly and return with greater urgency, composure and attacking intent.
One defeat does not define the campaign. The response will.
