Club Brugge Snatches Late Equaliser Against Atlético Madrid
February 18, 2026
234d agoThe game exploded into life early on as Atlético Madrid grabbed the lead inside the first ten minutes. Julián Álvarez coolly converted a penalty for the Spanish side following a handball decision, giving Diego Simeone’s team a strong start in hostile territory. The visitors doubled their advantage right before half-time when Ademola Lookman netted from close range, putting Atlético firmly in control at the break.
However, Club Brugge responded with real spirit after the interval. Raphael Onyedika sparked the comeback with a well-taken goal just after the hour mark, before Nicolo Tresoldi fired the hosts level with another close-range finish. The atmosphere at Jan Breydel grew electric as Brugge fans sensed a remarkable turnaround.
Atlético regained the lead midway through the second half thanks to a rare own goal from a Brugge defender, but the drama wasn’t finished. Deep into stoppage time, Christos Tzolis struck a powerful finish to make it 3–3, leaving both teams neck-and-neck heading into the second leg.
The draw leaves the tie beautifully poised, with neither side able to claim a decisive edge yet. Atlético will be disappointed to drop points after leading by two goals, while Club Brugge will take huge confidence from their late fight-back as they prepare to host the return match.
