AFCON 2027: Nigeria’s Group Looks Easy — Until You See the Catch
On paper, Nigeria's road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations does not look particularly frightening.

53d agoOn paper, Nigeria's road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations does not look particularly frightening.
The Super Eagles have been drawn alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania in Group L, avoiding several of the continent's biggest names in the qualifying draw.
But there is a twist.
Nigeria are not simply fighting for one of the top two places. They are effectively fighting for one qualification ticket.
Tanzania Have Already Secured Their Place:
Tanzania are one of the three co-hosts of AFCON 2027, alongside Kenya and Uganda.
That means they already have an automatic place at the finals, regardless of how they perform in the qualifiers.
CAF has therefore made a special provision for Group L: only the highest-ranked team among Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will qualify alongside Tanzania.
So while other groups offer two qualification spots, Nigeria's group offers just one spot to the three non-host nations.
That changes everything.
Nigeria Are the Favourites — But They Cannot Afford Mistakes:
There is little doubt that Nigeria enter the group as the favourites.
The three-time African champions possess considerably more experience and star power than their opponents, and expectations will naturally be high when the qualifiers begin.
But being the favourite and actually qualifying are two different things.
Nigeria have already experienced some uncomfortable moments against teams outside Africa's traditional elite.
Madagascar famously defeated the Super Eagles 2-0 at the 2019 AFCON, while Guinea-Bissau have also caused Nigeria problems in recent years.
Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria in Abuja during the qualifying race for the 2023 AFCON before the Super Eagles returned the favour in Bissau.
Those results should serve as a warning.
Madagascar Will Not Be Intimidated:
Madagascar may not have Nigeria's footballing pedigree, but they have already demonstrated that they can compete against the continent's bigger nations.
Their victory over Nigeria in 2019 remains one of the most memorable results in their football history.
For the Barea, the upcoming qualifiers represent another opportunity to prove that their rise was not a one-off.
Nigeria will therefore have to treat every game as a serious assignment.
Guinea-Bissau Know Nigeria Too Well:
Then there is Guinea-Bissau.
The two sides have become familiar opponents over the past few years, having met in both AFCON qualifying and tournament football.
That familiarity could make their meetings particularly difficult.
Guinea-Bissau know Nigeria's strengths, while the Super Eagles know exactly what their opponents are capable of.
With only one qualification place available between the three non-host teams, every dropped point could carry enormous consequences.
Chelle Has No Room for Complacency:
For Eric Chelle, this is where the real work begins.
The first two matchdays are scheduled for the FIFA international window between September 21 and October 6, 2026, before the next two rounds in November and the final two matchdays in March 2027.
That gives the Super Eagles several months to establish themselves at the top of the group.
But they cannot afford a slow start.
A couple of unexpected draws or a defeat away from home could suddenly transform a seemingly comfortable qualification campaign into a tense battle.
One Group. One Ticket:
That is ultimately what makes Nigeria's group more interesting than it first appears.
Tanzania already have their place.
Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau do not.
Only one of them will join the hosts at AFCON 2027.
Nigeria have the quality to win that race, but they will have to prove it on the pitch.
The group looks easy. The mathematics say otherwise.
And when the qualifiers begin in September, the Super Eagles will have one simple objective:
Finish above everyone else — or miss out on AFCON 2027.
