40d agoNigeria’s Golden Eaglets are gradually stepping up their preparations for the upcoming WAFU-B U17 Championship, with the team continuing to fine-tune its squad during their training camp in Abuja.
Head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere and his technical crew are using a series of friendly matches to assess the young players and determine the best combination ahead of the regional tournament.
The Eaglets recently featured in two different friendly encounters at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch inside the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Their first test ended in an impressive 4-0 victory over Simonben Academy of Kaduna. Nigeria managed just one goal before the break but produced a much stronger attacking display in the second half, adding three more goals to seal a comfortable win.
The second fixture proved to be a different challenge.
The young Eaglets faced Galadima FC of Abuja later in the day and were unable to break down their opponents' organised defence. Despite creating opportunities, Nigeria failed to find the back of the net as the game finished 0-0.
For the technical crew, the two matches provided useful lessons. While the emphatic victory showed the team's attacking ability, the stalemate against Galadima highlighted the need for greater creativity and efficiency when playing against well-organised opposition.
Uwejamomere is currently working with a large pool of players as he looks to assemble a squad capable of representing Nigeria at the WAFU-B tournament.
The championship is scheduled to take place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from October 4 to 17, 2026, with qualification and regional success expected to be among the Eaglets' major targets.
With Nigeria's rich history at U17 level, expectations will naturally be high. The Golden Eaglets are five-time FIFA U17 World Cup champions, and the current crop will be eager to prove that they can carry that tradition forward.
For now, the focus remains on preparation. More training sessions and friendly matches will give the coaching staff an opportunity to identify their strongest players, build team chemistry and correct weaknesses before the competitive action begins.
The road to WAFU-B has officially entered another crucial phase.
