29d agoDr Danny Jordaan will continue as president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) after winning the latest presidential election and seeing off a challenge from Sandile Zungu.
The outcome keeps Jordaan in charge of South African football after a highly contested election campaign that placed the association’s leadership, governance and future direction under intense scrutiny.
Jordaan, who has been at the centre of SAFA’s administration for more than a decade, secured enough support at the elective congress to extend his tenure.
His challenger, Sandile Zungu, had entered the race promising significant changes to the way SAFA is run. The AmaZulu chairman had been vocal about his concerns over the association’s leadership and the electoral process, making the contest one of the most closely followed SAFA elections in recent years.
The campaign became increasingly heated in the build-up to the vote, with allegations and counter-allegations dominating much of the discussion surrounding the election.
Despite Zungu's push for change, it was Jordaan who emerged victorious, ensuring continuity at the top of South African football.
The re-election now puts the focus back on Jordaan and his administration, with major issues including grassroots development, national-team performance, football governance and the growth of domestic competitions expected to remain high on the agenda.
For Zungu, the result marks a setback in his attempt to bring a new direction to SAFA. However, his campaign has brought renewed attention to calls for reform within the organisation.
With the election now decided, Jordaan begins another chapter of his SAFA presidency with expectations from South African football stakeholders likely to be high.
