PSG Hold On in Thrilling Draw to Reach Champions League Last 16
February 25, 2026
227d agoIn a dramatic UEFA Champions League knockout playoff second-leg encounter, Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2 with AS Monaco but prevailed 5-4 on aggregate to secure their place in the Round of 16.
The climactic tie at the Parc des Princes saw both teams trade blows in an entertaining contest, with momentum swinging back and forth before PSG ultimately booked their progress in front of a passionate home crowd.
Monaco, buoyed by their spirited performance and a slim aggregate deficit from the first leg, stunned the home side when Maghnes Akliouche fired them into the lead just before half-time. The visitors were well organised and threatened to derail PSG’s plans early on, hanging on to their advantage as the first half drew to a close.
The match shifted dramatically shortly after the break when Monaco midfielder Mamadou Coulibaly was shown a second yellow card and sent off, leaving his side with ten men and giving PSG a crucial opening.
PSG captain Marquinhos capitalised soon after, nodding in the equaliser, and within minutes Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck to put the hosts ahead on the night and in aggregate. Despite the setback, Monaco refused to give up, and Jordan Teze bundled in a late stoppage-time equaliser to make it 2-2.
Despite the thrilling finish, PSG’s two goals proved enough to see out the tie, allowing them to extend their impressive run in Europe’s premier club competition.
With this result, the defending champions move on to the Champions League Round of 16, where they will learn their next opponents after Friday’s draw — a stage PSG have reached consistently in recent seasons.
