186d agoArsenal took a major step toward the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in Lisbon on April 7, 2026. In a match defined by discipline and patience, Mikel Arteta’s side weathered sustained pressure before delivering a decisive blow in stoppage time.
Kai Havertz proved to be the difference-maker, coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner that silenced the home crowd at the Estádio José Alvalade.
The encounter was a tense affair from the outset, with Sporting CP showing confidence and attacking intent in front of their supporters. The Portuguese side created the better openings early on, testing Arsenal’s defensive resolve with quick transitions and sharp movement in the final third.
Despite a few promising moments, Arsenal struggled to impose themselves offensively, lacking precision in key areas during the first half.
Much of the credit for keeping the game level belongs to Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who delivered a series of crucial saves under pressure. His composure and shot-stopping ensured Arsenal stayed in contention as Sporting pushed for an opener.
As the match progressed, the intensity in midfield battles increased, and both sides found it difficult to carve out clear-cut chances.
Sensing the need for a spark, Arteta turned to his bench late in the game—and the decision paid off.
In added time, a well-worked move involving Gabriel Martinelli set up Havertz, who calmly slotted home to give Arsenal a priceless advantage. The late strike not only secured the win but also shifted momentum firmly in Arsenal’s favor heading into the second leg.
With the return fixture set for the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal now hold a slender but significant lead. However, the tie is far from settled, and Sporting CP will believe they still have a chance to turn things around. For Arsenal, the focus now shifts to finishing the job at home and continuing their push for European glory.
