Bruno Fernandes Outshining Ronaldo’s Legacy at Manchester United
March 16, 2026
209d agoFor years, Manchester United have searched for a player capable of leading the team through difficult periods. In recent seasons, that responsibility has fallen squarely on the shoulders of Bruno Fernandes.
The Portuguese midfielder has not only embraced the role but has become the driving force behind United’s performances, delivering leadership, creativity, and consistency when the club has often lacked stability.
Bruno Fernandes’ influence on the team has been immense since his arrival in 2020. While Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary first spell at Old Trafford brought trophies and unforgettable moments, Fernandes has arguably been even more essential to United’s current squad.
The difference lies in context. Ronaldo thrived in a star-studded team that included world-class players across the pitch, whereas Fernandes has frequently carried a struggling side during a turbulent era for the club.
Despite playing in a team that has endured managerial changes and inconsistent results, Fernandes has remained United’s most reliable performer.
Even during Ronaldo’s return to the club in the 2021-22 season, the midfielder’s combined goals and assists were only slightly behind Ronaldo’s tally. That consistency has been remarkable considering the lack of stability around him.
The 2025–26 season has arguably been the peak of Fernandes’ influence. His goals and assists have directly contributed a huge share of United’s league points, underlining just how central he is to the team’s success.
At one stage of the campaign, his contributions accounted for roughly half of the club’s points total, highlighting how dependent United are on their captain to create and score.
Creativity has also been a major part of his impact. Fernandes has climbed to the top of the Premier League assist charts and recently broke a long-standing club record previously held by David Beckham for most assists in a single league season for Manchester United.
Such achievements reinforce his reputation as one of the most productive playmakers in the league.
With numbers that rival the best players in the league and a level of influence that few can match, Fernandes has firmly placed himself in the conversation for the Premier League’s top individual award.
While other contenders such as Declan Rice have impressed this season, Fernandes’ overall contribution—both statistically and in leadership—makes a compelling case for him to be recognised as the league’s standout performer.
Whether or not the award ultimately comes his way, one thing is clear: Bruno Fernandes has become the heartbeat of Manchester United. In a period defined by change and uncertainty at Old Trafford, he has been the constant presence holding everything together.
