262d agoAt St James’ Park in Newcastle, Newcastle United delivered a commanding performance to beat PSV Eindhoven 3–0 in their UEFA Champions League league-phase match, taking a big step toward securing progression in Europe’s premier club competition. The Magpies were aggressive from the outset, pressing high and capitalizing on PSV mistakes to seize control early in the contest. Their victory not only showcased attacking quality but also cemented their position among the top eight teams in the group.
The scoring started in the 8th minute when Yoane Wissa pounced on a defensive miscue by PSV to slot home the opener, much to the delight of the home crowd. With momentum firmly on their side, Newcastle doubled their lead in the 30th minute through Anthony Gordon, whose alert play allowed him to finish clinically after another PSV error. By halftime, the hosts had a comfortable cushion and were in control of the match.
In the second half, Newcastle continued to assert themselves. Harvey Barnes put the result beyond doubt in the 65th minute with a composed finish following a swift counter-attack, giving the Magpies a three-goal advantage and effectively sealing the win. Throughout the match, Newcastle’s attacking trio caused PSV consistent problems and kept the visitors pinned back.
Defensively, Newcastle were solid, limiting PSV’s dangerous opportunities and keeping a clean sheet — an important achievement in European competition. Even with the absence of their captain Bruno Guimarães due to a first-half injury, the team maintained structure and focus to see out the match.
The result boosts Newcastle’s confidence as they approach the final league-phase round of fixtures, with ambitions of either finishing in the top eight to avoid extra playoffs or securing automatic qualification into the Round of 16. PSV, meanwhile, will need a strong response in their final group match if they hope to stay in contention for advancement.
