Lisbon Shock: Benfica Stun Real Madrid in Dramatic Champions League Thriller
January 29, 2026
255d agoYesterday’s UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Benfica delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the group stage, as the Portuguese side stunned the Spanish giants with a 4–2 victory at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. Benfica’s win not only kept their European hopes alive but also denied Real Madrid direct qualification to the last 16, forcing Los Blancos into the February knockout playoff round instead of an automatic top-eight spot.
The action began with Real Madrid taking the lead through Kylian Mbappé, who scored in the 30th minute, and then doubled his tally early in the second half, giving the visitors a seemingly comfortable advantage. However, Benfica fought back with determination: Andreas Schjelderup scored twice — including the equaliser just before the break and another after — and Vangelis Pavlidis converted a penalty to put the hosts ahead, turning the game on its head.
As the match reached stoppage time, Real Madrid found themselves on the back foot. Two late red cards reduced them to nine men, further complicating their efforts to salvage a result. In the 98th minute, Benfica’s goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin ventured forward for a set piece and dramatically headed home to make it 4-2, sending the stadium into raptures and sealing a famous win that elevated Benfica into the Champions League playoff positions on goal difference.
The result marked a bitter night for Real Madrid, who now must regroup and prepare for the first knockout hurdle in February, while Benfica celebrate a memorable victory under the management of José Mourinho. The Portuguese club’s resilience and late heroics ensured they stay in the competition, highlighting the unpredictable excitement of Champions League football.
