Senegal’s Triumph in a Dramatic AFCON 2025 Final vs Morocco
January 18, 2026
265d agoIn a night of high drama and historic significance, Senegal emerged victorious over hosts Morocco to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy, prevailing 1–0 after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The only goal of the match came from midfielder Pape Gueye early in extra time, crowning Senegal as African champions for the second time in their history, having previously won the title in 2021.
The final itself was a tense, tightly contested affair. Throughout regular time, both sides had chances but neither could find the breakthrough. Morocco applied sustained pressure on their home turf, but Senegal’s defense and goalkeeper Édouard Mendy stood firm, with Mendy notably saving a late penalty from Morocco’s Brahim Díaz after a contentious VAR decision deep into stoppage time.
Controversy punctuated the climax of the encounter. Following the award of the late penalty, Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, a dramatic show of dissent that paused the game and stirred fierce reactions from fans and pundits alike. After a period of intense negotiation led by captain Sadio Mané, the team returned to complete the match, with Mendy’s calm penalty save keeping Senegal’s title hopes alive.
Once extra time began, Senegal struck swiftly. Gueye’s superbly struck goal in the 94th minute proved decisive, sending Senegalese supporters into jubilation and turning the course of the final. Even as Morocco pressed for an equalizer — coming close with set-piece opportunities — Senegal held firm to secure the victory.
This triumph not only reinforces Senegal’s status as a continental powerhouse but also marks a poignant moment in African football. Beating the host nation in a final is a rare and difficult feat, and doing so in such dramatic circumstances will ensure this match is remembered as one of the most compelling in AFCON history.
