🚨Man City Held by Brighton as Title Chase Stalls in Third Straight Draw
January 7, 2026
276d agoManchester City’s Premier League title hopes suffered another significant blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a dogged Brighton & Hove Albion side at the Etihad Stadium . This result marks a third consecutive draw for Pep Guardiola's champions, leaving them five points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a game in hand . The match was defined by Erling Haaland’s milestone goal and a string of costly missed chances that will haunt the home side .
Key Match Stats
· Final Score: Manchester City 1 - 1 Brighton & Hove Albion
· City Goal: Erling Haaland (41' pen)
· Brighton Goal: Kaoru Mitoma (60')
· Possession: 60.4% - 39.6% (in City's favour)
Hamstrung by a defensive injury crisis that ruled out Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Josko Gvardiol, Guardiola was forced to hand a senior debut to 20-year-old defender Max Alleyne . The hosts took the lead just before halftime when Jeremy Doku was fouled in the box; after a VAR review, Haaland stepped up to convert the penalty for his 150th goal in a Manchester City shirt .
City's fragile lead lasted only 15 minutes into the second half. Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma, making his second start since returning from injury, found space on the edge of the box and drove a low shot through a crowd of defenders to equalise . The visitors grew in confidence and should have taken the lead moments later, but Diego Gómez miskicked from point-blank range with the goal gaping .
The final half-hour was dominated by City pressure and remarkable wastefulness. Haaland saw a header cleared off the line and then, with the game’s clearest chance, shot straight at goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after being set up by Rayan Cherki . The draw leaves City's title defence in a precarious state, while Brighton’s resilient performance earns them a valuable point to stay in the top half of the table .
