255d agoThe match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples served as a dramatic finale to the group stage, with both teams knowing exactly what was at stake. Chelsea needed a win to secure an automatic place in the Champions League Round of 16, while Napoli required all three points to keep their own European hopes alive. The opening stages were tense, but it was Chelsea who struck first when Enzo Fernández converted a penalty in the 19th minute to give the visitors an early lead. Despite going ahead, Chelsea struggled at times to control the game against a spirited Napoli side.
Napoli responded with real energy before half-time. Antonio Vergara produced a moment of individual brilliance to level the score, and just before the break Rasmus Højlund fired the hosts into the lead, sending the crowd into celebration and putting Conte’s side in a strong position. However, Chelsea came out with renewed determination in the second half, knowing they needed to reverse the deficit to progress directly to the knockout rounds.
The turning point came after the hour mark when João Pedro struck a powerful equaliser for Chelsea, restoring parity and swinging momentum back to the visitors. With the clock winding down and the result still in the balance, João Pedro had the final say by scoring again in the closing stages to make it 3-2. His second goal not only completed Chelsea’s comeback but also confirmed their place in the top eight teams advancing directly to the Round of 16.
The result was a bitter blow for Napoli, as their Champions League campaign came to an end despite a strong performance in front of their home fans, while Chelsea celebrated a hard-fought and crucial victory to continue their journey in Europe’s premier club competition.
