Arsenal Edge Chelsea 2-1 in Thrilling London Derby to Strengthen Title Charge
March 1, 2026
223d agoIn a tightly contested London derby at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Chelsea thanks to a second-half winner that keeps the Gunners firmly in the title race. The hosts took the lead in the 21st minute when William Saliba nodded in from a corner routine, giving Arsenal an early advantage.
Chelsea looked to respond and their persistence paid off just before halftime when Piero Hincapié unfortunately turned a cross into his own net to level the scores going into the break.
The second half saw Arsenal regain control, especially from set-pieces. In the 66th minute, Jurrien Timber rose highest to head home from another corner, restoring Arsenal’s lead and ultimately deciding the match. Chelsea’s challenge was made even more difficult shortly after when Pedro Neto was sent off for a second yellow card, reducing the Blues to ten men and limiting their ability to press for a second equalizer.
Both teams had their moments after the red card.
Chelsea mounted a late push and even had a goal ruled out for offside, but Arsenal’s defense, backed by crucial saves from goalkeeper David Raya, managed to hold firm until the final whistle. The result marked a hard-fought win for the home side and ended Chelsea’s recent unbeaten streak under manager Liam Rosenior.
This victory is significant for Arsenal’s Premier League ambitions, as it extends their lead at the top of the table to five points, even though they have played one more game than their closest rivals. Maintaining such consistency in high-pressure clashes, especially in a storied rivalry like this one, underscores Arsenal’s strong form this season.
For Chelsea, the narrow defeat and the impact of the red card will be a disappointment as they continue their battle for a top-four finish.
The London derby between these two historic clubs is always a highlight of the Premier League calendar, and today’s edition delivered drama, tactical battles, and moments that could influence both teams’ seasons as they push toward their respective goals.
