The road to Los Angeles 2028 has been mapped out for the Super Falcons, and Nigeria will have to navigate a difficult four-round knockout journey if they are to return to the Olympic stage. Nigeria's campaign begins against Comoros, with the first major test scheduled for October. The Falcons enter the qualifiers at the second-round stage after receiving a bye, giving them one less hurdle to overcome on their route to the Olympics. But the advantage ends there. The Comoros tie is only the opening chapter of what could become a long African qualification battle. Comoros Stands in Nigeria's Way First: The Super Falcons are expected to face Comoros over two legs on October 9 and 13, 2026. Comoros earned their place in the second round after cruising past Sudan with a remarkable 30–0 aggregate score, setting up a meeting with one of Africa's most decorated women's national teams. For Nigeria, the objective will be simple: win the tie and move on. Anything less could bring the Olympic dream to an early end. The Road Gets Tougher: Should Nigeria eliminate Comoros, the Falcons will advance to the third round, where Morocco or DR Congo could await. That stage is scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027, and the level of competition is expected to rise considerably. Morocco have emerged as one of Africa's fastest-growing women's football nations, while DR Congo are no strangers to the continental stage. Either opponent would provide a significantly tougher examination than the opening round. Four Teams Could Await in Round Four: Survival in the third round would send Nigeria into another two-legged showdown in October 2027. Potential opponents include Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic and Mali. By this point, there will be little margin for error. With Olympic qualification getting closer, every goal, away performance and defensive mistake could prove decisive. One Final Obstacle: The final qualifying round is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027. Nigeria could potentially face another heavyweight opponent, with Cameroon, Algeria, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and others among the nations that could feature at this stage. And the reward will be enormous. Only two African nations will earn places in the women's football tournament at the Los Angeles Olympics. Falcons Chasing Another Olympic Appearance: Nigeria's return to the Olympics at Paris 2024 ended a 16-year wait for an appearance at the Games. Now, the Super Falcons are aiming to make it two consecutive Olympic appearances. The journey, however, will demand consistency, resilience and the ability to survive four separate knockout rounds. First, it's Comoros. Then potentially Morocco or DR Congo. After that comes another dangerous opponent. And finally, one last battle for one of Africa's two Olympic tickets. Los Angeles 2028 is the destination. For the Super Falcons, the fight starts in October.
