29d agoThe race for the knockout stages of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 is heating up, with several nations already seeing their campaigns come to an end as the group stage reaches its decisive phase.
With Groups A and B completed and Groups C and D concluding on Saturday, four teams have already been eliminated from the competition.
1. Benin
Benin’s historic campaign has come to an end after the young side finished bottom of Group A. They opened with a 2–2 draw against Mexico but suffered a heavy 8–0 defeat to Argentina in their second game. Their final group match against hosts Poland ended in another defeat, leaving Benin with just one point.
The West Africans finished with a goal difference of -11, ending their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds.
2. Mexico
Mexico also bowed out of the competition after a difficult Group A campaign.
El Tri began with a 2–2 draw against Benin before losing 2–1 to Poland. They then needed a result against Argentina but were beaten 3–2 in a dramatic encounter.
Mexico finished the group stage with only one point and could not secure one of the available third-place qualification spots.
3. Tanzania
Tanzania’s World Cup journey ended in Group B after three difficult matches against some of the tournament's strongest sides.
They lost 4–1 to Brazil in their opening game and followed that with a 5–1 defeat to England.
Their final match against Canada proved decisive, with the Canadians producing a commanding 6–0 victory. Tanzania therefore finished without a point and were eliminated from the competition. FIFA confirmed their elimination following the heavy defeat.
4. New Zealand
New Zealand are the latest nation to exit the tournament.
The Football Ferns suffered defeats to Japan and Italy, conceding five goals across the two matches. Italy's 3–0 victory over New Zealand left the European side safely through while New Zealand remained on zero points.
With their final group game against the United States coming on Saturday, New Zealand could no longer reach the knockout phase.
The Battle for the Remaining Places:
While these four teams are out, the competition remains wide open.
Canada, for example, kept their hopes alive with a huge 6–0 win over Tanzania, moving to four points and putting themselves in contention for one of the best third-place spots.
England also advanced from Group B despite losing 2–1 to Brazil, thanks to their superior team conduct record over Canada.
Meanwhile, Nigeria's Falconets remain alive in Group F. They currently have one point after a 2–0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw with China, with New Caledonia awaiting them in their final group game on Sunday.
New Caledonia themselves are not yet mathematically eliminated, despite suffering heavy defeats to China and Spain. They still have a final opportunity against Nigeria.
With the final group matches being played, the battle for the remaining Round of 16 places is set to go down to the wire.
