The battle for the presidency of the South African Football Association (SAFA) has taken a dramatic turn, with presidential challenger Sandile Zungu accusing the association's leadership of using underhand tactics to influence the upcoming election. Zungu, who is challenging incumbent president Danny Jordaan, made the explosive allegations during a media briefing as the elective congress draws closer. He claimed that some regions supporting his campaign had been unfairly prevented from participating in the election. According to Zungu, several figures he considers important voices for change have been disqualified from the forthcoming congress. He believes the decisions are politically motivated and designed to weaken his support ahead of the vote. “We are seething with anger in terms of what is being done to regions,” Zungu said, while insisting that his campaign remains determined to challenge the situation. The AmaZulu president went further by alleging that there was an attempt to destabilise certain SAFA regions and manipulate the electoral process. “There is an attempt at committing electoral fraud. It will not succeed,” Zungu declared. Zungu Considers Legal Action The presidential challenger revealed that his team is consulting legal representatives over the disputed disqualifications and is considering possible legal steps. The controversy comes after months of tension surrounding SAFA's electoral process, with Zungu's camp previously raising concerns about the treatment of regions perceived to support his campaign. Zungu has also alleged that financial incentives are being offered in an attempt to influence delegates ahead of the election, urging supporters to reject such offers and vote for change. These claims remain allegations and have not been established as facts through an independent legal or electoral finding. Jordaan Faces Major Challenge Jordaan has led SAFA since 2013 and is now facing one of his strongest challenges for the presidency. Zungu's campaign has centred on improving governance, transparency, financial discipline and grassroots football development. He has repeatedly argued that South African football needs a new direction and greater accountability. The stakes are therefore high as both camps attempt to secure support among SAFA's voting structures. SAFA's governance committee has confirmed that both Zungu and Jordaan are eligible to contest the presidential election, clearing the way for the much-anticipated showdown. With the congress approaching, allegations surrounding regional participation, delegate eligibility and the integrity of the electoral process are likely to remain at the centre of the contest. For Zungu, however, the message is clear: despite the controversy, he remains confident that his campaign can overcome the obstacles and end Jordaan's long-standing tenure at the helm of South African football. The SAFA presidential election is scheduled for September 12, with the outcome set to determine the next chapter of South African football's leadership.
