31d agoNigeria’s D’Tigress have finally received the financial reward promised to them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that the naira equivalent of $100,000 has been paid to each member of the D’Tigress squad, bringing an end to the wait for the cash component of the presidential reward.
Members of the team’s technical and support staff have also received the promised $50,000 each, according to the NSC.
The payments are part of the recognition package announced after D’Tigress produced another dominant performance on the continental stage, defeating Mali 78–64 in the AfroBasket final to retain their crown.
The victory was particularly significant as Nigeria became the first nation to win the women’s AfroBasket title five consecutive times, further cementing D’Tigress’ dominance in African women’s basketball.
Presidential reward package completed:
Following their historic achievement, President Tinubu announced a series of rewards for the players and officials.
Each player was promised $100,000, while officials were allocated $50,000. The government also pledged three-bedroom homes in Abuja for members of the victorious team, alongside national honours.
The NSC confirmed that the housing component and national honours had already been delivered, meaning the latest payments complete the major elements of the presidential reward package.
The development will come as welcome news to the players, who had been waiting for the financial aspect of the pledge to be fulfilled.
Government continues to reward sporting success:
The payment also highlights the Federal Government’s renewed focus on recognising athletes who deliver major international success for Nigeria.
With D’Tigress’ reward now settled, attention is expected to shift towards the Super Falcons, who are also in line for presidential financial rewards following their success at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
For D’Tigress, however, the latest development marks the closing chapter of a historic campaign that once again established Nigeria as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.
