African champions Mamelodi Sundowns are set for a major continental showdown when they welcome Asian champions Al Ahli in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on Saturday afternoon. The encounter brings together two of the strongest teams from Africa and Asia, with both sides battling for progression in FIFA’s global club competition. Sundowns enter the fixture after their successful CAF Champions League campaign, where they claimed the African crown and earned the opportunity to represent the continent on the international stage. The South African champions will be hoping to use their home advantage at Loftus Versfeld as they take on an Al Ahli side packed with international experience and quality. Sundowns Team News: Head coach Miguel Cardoso has been preparing his squad for the demanding fixture, although Sundowns will have to manage a number of selection issues. Some of the club's recent signings are unavailable for the match after missing the registration deadline for the Intercontinental Cup. Among those affected are Deano van Rooyen, Thabang Matuludi and Thabo Cele. Khuliso Mudau is also unavailable, leaving Cardoso with some decisions to make as he finalises his team for the clash. Despite the absences, Sundowns still have plenty of experience and quality across the squad, led by captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Al Ahli Arrive With Plenty of Firepower: Al Ahli will provide a serious test for the Brazilians. The Saudi Arabian club qualified as Asian champions and have already begun their Intercontinental Cup campaign, defeating Auckland City in the opening round. Their squad includes several high-profile names, with Ivan Toney, Édouard Mendy and Galeno among the players capable of making a difference. Sundowns will therefore need to remain disciplined defensively while finding a way to exploit weaknesses in the Al Ahli defence. What Is at Stake? The importance of the match extends beyond continental pride. The winner will progress to the next stage of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, moving one step closer to a potential meeting with European champions Paris Saint-Germain. For Sundowns, it is another opportunity to demonstrate their quality against top opposition outside Africa. The Brazilians will be hoping their experience, home support and continental pedigree can help them overcome Al Ahli and continue their journey in the competition.
