⚽ AFCON 2025: Nigeria cruise past Mozambique with a commanding 4–0 victory

278d agoThe Super Eagles of Nigeria soared into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with an emphatic and commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in Fez on Monday night, sending a powerful statement to the rest of the tournament. The win, achieved in the Round of 16, showcased Nigeria's formidable attacking firepower and set up a blockbuster clash in the next round.
Inspired by a brilliant performance from Ademola Lookman, Nigeria effectively sealed the match with two first-half goals. Lookman opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a precise finish into the top corner, his third goal of the tournament. Just five minutes later, he turned provider, delivering a cross that star striker Victor Osimhen turned in to double the lead. The same devastating combination struck again two minutes after the restart, with Osimhen scoring his second to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond any doubt.
The victory was rounded off in the 75th minute when striker Akor Adams smashed in a fourth goal, with Lookman again providing the assist. Mozambique, making their historic first appearance in the AFCON knockout stages, were outclassed and struggled to create meaningful chances against a disciplined Nigerian defense that kept a clean sheet—a marked improvement from their porous group-stage displays.
This dominant performance announces Nigeria as serious title contenders, having now scored 12 goals in four tournament matches. While questions about defensive solidity against stronger opponents remain, the free-flowing attack led by Lookman and Osimhen gives the Super Eagles a formidable chance as they advance to face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals, continuing their quest for a fourth continental crown.
