48d agoNigeria’s Falconets have reportedly been hit by a late visa setback just as the team prepares to travel to Poland for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
According to a report by SCORENigeria, only 15 members of the Falconets’ final squad had secured the necessary visas at the time of the report, leaving other members of the delegation facing uncertainty ahead of the team’s scheduled departure.
The development comes at an unfortunate time for Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, who have spent weeks preparing for the global tournament and were scheduled to begin their final phase of preparations in Poland.
Visa Trouble Threatens Preparations:
The reported visa difficulties have created an unexpected logistical problem for the Falconets, with efforts reportedly ongoing to resolve the situation and ensure that the affected members of the delegation can join the team.
While at least 15 people have reportedly received their visas, concerns remain over those whose applications were not approved or have yet to be processed.
The situation could potentially affect the team’s preparations, particularly if members of the playing squad and technical delegation are unable to travel together.
Nigeria had originally planned to depart earlier, but the visa delays contributed to the postponement of the team's trip. Recent reports indicate that the Falconets are now set to travel on Monday, August 24.
NFF Yet to Issue Official Statement:
Despite the seriousness of the reported development, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had not issued an official statement on the visa situation at the time of reporting.
This has left much of the information surrounding the issue based on reports from sources familiar with the team’s preparations.
The expectation is that the NFF will provide clarity on the situation and confirm the number of players and officials who have secured their travel documents.
For a team preparing for a major FIFA tournament, resolving the matter quickly is particularly important. Any prolonged uncertainty could disrupt the squad’s final preparations and acclimatisation plans.
A Crucial World Cup Campaign Awaits:
The Falconets will enter the tournament carrying Nigeria’s remarkable record at this level. FIFA confirmed that Nigeria will compete at the U-20 Women’s World Cup for the 12th consecutive time, having never missed an edition since the competition began in 2002.
The 2026 tournament will take place in Poland from September 5 to September 27, with Nigeria drawn in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.
The Falconets will begin their campaign against Spain on September 7 before facing China and New Caledonia.
Nigeria also has a strong history in the competition, having reached the final twice, in 2010 and 2014, although the elusive U-20 World Cup title has remained out of reach.
Focus Now Turns to Resolution:
With the tournament fast approaching, the priority will be to resolve the visa situation and ensure the full delegation can travel without further complications.
The team is also expected to use its time in Poland for final preparations, including friendly matches against Poland and the Republic of Korea before the tournament begins.
For the young Nigerian players, the focus should ultimately be on the football. But before they can turn their attention fully to Spain and their other Group F opponents, the off-field visa uncertainty needs to be settled.
The Falconets have earned their place among the world's best youth women's teams. Now, all eyes will be on the NFF and the relevant authorities to ensure that administrative issues do not stand in the way of Nigeria's World Cup ambitions.
TipNGoal will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
