January 21, 2026
262d agoIn a vital UEFA Champions League league-phase encounter at the Orange Vélodrome, Liverpool delivered a commanding performance to defeat Olympique Marseille 3–0 and take a strong step toward securing a spot in the last 16 of the competition. The English side, looking to climb into the top eight of the group standings, went ahead on the stroke of halftime with a spectacular free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai, leaving the home crowd stunned just before the break.
After a competitive first half in which chances were at a premium, Liverpool’s breakthrough came in a moment of individual brilliance. Szoboszlai’s precise set-piece curled beyond the Marseille wall and into the corner, giving the visitors a crucial lead at a key juncture of the match and swinging momentum firmly in their favor.
Marseille continued to push for an equalizer after the break but were undone midway through the second half when Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli inadvertently turned a cross into his own net under pressure from Liverpool’s attack, extending the visitors’ advantage.
As the game entered stoppage time, Cody Gakpo capped the win with a composed finish, sealing a confident 3–0 victory for Liverpool deep into injury time.
The result moves Liverpool closer to guaranteeing progression from the group, highlighting their resilience and tactical discipline on the road. For Marseille, despite spirited efforts and periods of pressure, the inability to convert chances and defensive lapses ultimately cost them against a clinical Liverpool side.
Overall, the Reds’ performance demonstrated both attacking creativity and defensive solidity on a night where European ambitions were on the line. With this victory, Liverpool can look ahead to their final group game with confidence, while Marseille must regroup quickly to stay in contention for the playoff spots
