Egypt Edge Côte d’Ivoire 3–2 to Book AFCON 2025 Semifinal Spot
January 10, 2026
273d agoEgypt booked their place in the AFCON semifinals with a thrilling 3–2 victory over the defending champions Côte d’Ivoire in Agadir. The Pharaohs struck early, with Omar Marmoush opening the scoring in the 4th minute, followed by a headed goal from Ramy Rabia just past the half-hour mark. Egypt seemed in complete control when talisman Mohamed Salah extended the lead to 3–0 shortly after halftime.
However, the Ivorian side refused to go quietly. An unfortunate own goal brought them to 3–1, and later in the second half Guéla Doué pulled one back to make it 3–2, setting up a nervy finish. Despite dominating possession at times, Côte d’Ivoire couldn’t find an equalizer, and Egypt held on to secure their semifinal berth.
The match was as much a battle of tactics as talent. Egypt effectively capitalized on their early chances and showcased sharp transitions, while Côte d’Ivoire battled back with resilience, particularly after falling behind. The Pharaohs’ ability to maintain their slim lead under intense pressure was key to the final result, and it showcased the depth and character of the squad.
With this win, Egypt advances to face Senegal in the semi-finals, keeping their hopes alive for a record-extending eighth AFCON title — a trophy they haven’t lifted since 2010. The victory also ends Côte d’Ivoire’s run as reigning champions, bringing their title defense to a dramatic close.
Overall, the encounter lived up to its billing as a classic African footballing spectacle, blending tactical discipline, individual brilliance, and emotional swings that kept fans on edge until the final whistle.
