Manchester United has sacked manager Ruben Amorim with immediate effect following a dramatic public falling out with the club's hierarchy, ending his troubled 14-month tenure at Old Trafford.
The final act came after a 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds United on Sunday, where Amorim used his post-match press conference to launch a pointed challenge at the club's leadership. He insisted he had come to be "the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach," demanding control over areas like recruitment and clearly delineating responsibilities from the sporting director. These comments, seen as an explosive airing of private tensions, prompted the club's decision-makers to act within 24 hours.
Amorim's reign was marked by poor results and persistent conflict behind the scenes. The club is sixth in the league after 20 games, following a disastrous previous season where United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish (15th) and ended trophyless. Friction had been building for weeks over tactical inflexibility—specifically Amorim's insistence on a 3-4-3 formation—and frustrations over the January transfer window. The breakdown in relations with football director Jason Wilcox and the INEOS-led leadership proved irreparable.
Former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge on an interim basis, starting with an away match at Burnley. The club is likely to wait until the summer to appoint a permanent successor. United will have to pay up the remainder of Amorim's contract, which was set to run until 2027, as there is no clause for a discounted exit.
